Project Scope

Phase II added an additional 15,000 SF to the Museum facility, divided between the lower and main levels. It expands the museum on its east side and joins the previously constructed Phase I on its southern side, extending the building addition toward Market Street along Metcalf Street. The new addition provides ample exhibit space, including: Railroad Exhibition Gallery, Changing Exhibit Gallery, and a Business, Industry and Manufacturing Gallery. The project also required close and careful coordination as a 50-ton Shay locomotive was placed inside the addition during construction of the building, prior to the roof being set. Special attention was required to protect this iconic display while the building was built around the locomotive.

An impressive 2-story curved glass curtain wall facade is the primary feature of the structure. Behind it included the construction of numerous museum displays such as a period correct blacksmith area, canteen, and service station.
