The new 18,310 square foot Municipal Court Building located in Defiance, Ohio includes a drive-in Sally port, Holding Cells, Court Room, Magistrates Hearing Room, 8 transaction windows, a drive up transaction window, and an outdoor plaza to name a few items. The project also includes two parking lots - one that serves the new Municipal Court, and the other for the existing City Building. This project rests on a very small site, which made the coordination of building material lay down and storage very critical. The building sits on the corner of Thurston and Perry Streets and used to be the location of the Slocum Elementary School. The school was demolished and a hole was left where the basement used to be. The adjacent lot was an old lumber yard that sat on the banks of the Miami Erie Canal. A big challenge was dealing with the subsurface conditions as decades of brick, wood and other debris were commonly used as fill. The cleanup of the site and engineered fill of the basement were key in building a strong foundation for the new Municipal Court.
